Home Story; A Seller’s Perspective

“We first moved to Des Plaines 35 years ago, as newlyweds. We purchased a small home in this lovely neighborhood because we knew it was a perfect fit for us and our future family. After having three children, we realized we were going to need a larger home to accommodate our growing family. We knew it was going to be difficult to find such a great location near great schools that was also within walking distance of two parks, as well as the Metra train to Chicago, so we didn’t even try. Not to mention, our kids had become friends with many others in the neighborhood. We didn’t really want to try and find another safe neighborhood with trustworthy neighbors to let our kids explore. Those are a rare find. So, since we had a double lot, we built our dream home right in front of our starter home.

We lived right behind the construction site, so we were able to customize our new home to fit the needs of our family. Since we had three growing teenagers, we made sure to add a laundry chute to the upstairs linen closet to make the seemingly endless amounts of laundry easier to handle. We also made sure to add quad outlets throughout the entire house, to ensure all of their devices were charged when needed.

We made sure the kitchen was large enough to teach them how to cook, and that the counter tops were durable granite, to prevent any cooking catastrophes. Two and a half baths were needed, to avoid bathroom turf wars. And of course, four bedrooms and a large basement were also a necessity.

Our family has always enjoyed the outdoors, so we made sure the yard was taken care of as well. The backyard was carefully planned out with a landscape architect, and our kids needs in mind. We planted small trees so we could watch them grow. But we kept the majority of the yard open, so our kids and dogs could run around in it. We also poured a concrete patio so we could grill out.

The exterior of the house itself was also taken into consideration. Brick and limestone were used, not just because of how beautiful it is, but also because of its durability. They can take a direct hit from a basketball without any issues.

We have loved this house for over twenty years now. Our kids have left, and now have families of their own. Our grandkids have spent a lot of time here and loved it just as our kids did. But we realize it is time to move on, and we also know that we are committing a great disservice to other young families by keeping this gem to ourselves. We truly hope to find a family that will love it as much as we have.”
